The new gyroscopic self-leveling pool tables available on select cruises (aboard Royal Caribbean's Radiance family of ships) allow pool players to shoot lights out anytime, in all but the roughest seas.
Quality pool tables are level to thousandths of an inch tolerance along their playing surface. Modern cruise ships, despite their makers' efforts to provide a comfortable ride for cruise passengers, have until now failed to provide a pool table without a comical wobble to its surface.
The new Royal Caribbean tables have gyroscopic self-correcting underpinnings, a dream come true for pool players.
I've enjoyed some fantastic cruise sailings with my family, led tour groups on cruises, and also held a massive event, "SpyFest" aboard the stationary grande dame of cruise ships, H.M.S. Queen Mary, in Long Beach, California.
I can tell you that you'll want a cure for "sea legs" aboard ship, even if your seabound pool table is gyroscopic. Those Alaska sailings wih tables are a smart idea as the Alaskan portion of the Inside Passage - I've been on the Norwegian Pearl through the passage itself - is glass-smooth on many sailings due to natural buffering mountains and islands.
If you get dizzy aboard ship or off, and feel like you're adjusting as you walk to a moving ship when it's stationary, look at a distant point and spin about like a dancer or ice skater who holds their head in place as long as possible to clear your inner ear disturbance. Then go back and shoot more great pool without falling over!
Sixth Star Entertainment is partnering Royal Caribbean to offer pool classes, led by skilled instructors, aboard select sailings including Alaska and other world-class destinations. Enjoy and happy sailing!
