Throw

By Matthew Sherman, About.com

Definition: Balls are “thrown” when knocked aside from their usual paths by english, dirt, or dents on the table. Throw is unnoticed when the ball goes in and is mentioned most when easy shots are being missed.

Most pros use a tad of outside english in addition to center ball to help cinch their ball pocketing, as the outside english helps to counteract the throw induced by ball collision.

The balls cling together at impact for thousands of a second before releasing apart and heading on their way. Outside english allows the cue ball to roll or "gear" around the circumference of the object ball so there is reduced "cling" and therefore, throw...

...Picture two gears in your mind, whose surfaces roll across one another smoothly. Now picture those gears pushing together, grinding each other down, smashing through their machine (off their intended path of movement) without the outside english effect.

Examples: The President would have sunk the thirteen, but throw induced by the First Lady’s makeup (she touched the cue ball) ruined the shot.
