Their is a bit of black leather or other hard substance behind the crown of the tip. The rounded tip itself is typically preferred at not more than 1/8 of an inch in height. Some cue repairmen will place an added bit of material beneath the black tip and the white ferrule, providing added shock absorption and prolonging the life of the tip.
