Aiming the Follow Stroke

Hit the right spot

The follow stroke is oft overused in pool. Striking the cue ball about 70% of the way to its top as illustrated provides immediate forward roll to the ball.

Yet hitting the cue ball in its center or even below center for underspin, the cue ball will eventually pick up forward roll caused by friction with the table felt or cloth. When you need a little topspin on a stroke, even 60% of the way to the top is adequate. Much above 70% can cause a dread miscue unless you are performing a specialty follow stroke of some type.

Be certain to stroke through the cue ball for the basic follow stroke and not at it. Any stroke should have a flowing follow through.
