A gentle hold

The heart and soul of pool flow from an accurate hold on the cuestick. But how to make the classic pool grip, a thing of function and power? Take a look at a typical pool grip from several different viewpoints.

The grip is alive with potential as seen in this photo. Potential energy is ready to be thrust forward. My fingers are lightly touching the cue, alive with anticipation.

I am holding my right forearm relaxed, forward and just ahead of an angle perpendicular to the table surface. The upper and lower arms are held at a bit less than a ninety degree angle to the table surface. From this forearm position, I am ready to push forward or else swing back my shooting hand for the pool backswing.

The fingers are relaxed lightly about the stick, as you will see in subsequent photos. The cue is a butterfly you have captured, hold it firmly so it may not fly away, but do not crush it flat either!

90% of pool beginners and intermediates grip their cue too tightly. Grip a skilled pool player's bicep or forearm with the strength you use on your cue, then have him or her do the same to you. You may be greatly surprised at how gently they hold their cuestick!
