What I call the "tight center" stroke is a shot any rank beginner can do, if they know how. It is a terrific play to make on work close to the cue ball.

As pictured, the green six ball I wish to pocket is close to the cue ball, so close, in fact, a full, classic pool stroke might illegally strike the 6-ball or even create a double hit on the cue ball, when the white ball sticks for a moment to the six and is struck again on the same stroke by the cuestick.

The tight center stroke starts by placing the bridge hand quite close to the cue ball. This will allow for a short stroke indeed.
