The bulk of motion in the shooting arm comes from the elbow down in the player's forearm. Simply cradle the cue lightly in the fingers as I advocate but on the final forward movement with the cue stick, propel the forearm forward--the cue will come along for the ride accurately.
Make a fist of your shooting hand and rest it upright on your thigh while seated (so that that the loop of your curled forefinger and thumb are pointed up, toward the ceiling). Bring your fist toward your shoulder--making an effort to move the fist passively by moving the forearm up.
Make that same motion several times--now do it again very rapidly. You can feel the thrust that certain players employ to stroke a pool cue. This move helps the shooting hand from twisting a classic pool stroke offline.
Read on for three additional stroking techniques to try.
