Stop Shot

By Matthew Sherman, About.com

Definition: When a ball’s motion ends immediately after collision with an object ball because it strikes it head on while skidding or sliding across the felt without rolling or spinning; it “stops”. The term “stop” is shorthand for hitting a ball to produce this skid motion.

A cue ball six inches away from an object ball may be stroked directly into the object shooting at medium speed, hitting the cue ball at its center. This simple play is the first shot a new pool shooter should learn and master.
Examples:
To make a stop shot over a several foot distance, the cue ball must be hit lower than center ball and/or harder than medium speed so that it is skidding, not rolling at the moment of impact.
