Slate

By Matthew Sherman, About.com

Definition: A heavy, flat slab of sheet rock, placed underneath a table’s felt cloth. Slate gives the table a level surface for play. Cheaper tables (like the type mass produced for department stores) use a wood underlay rather than slate.
Examples: A skilled player can tell the quality of the slate beneath his hands after just several shots.
