Safety

By Matthew Sherman, About.com

Definition: A legal shot attempted for defensive purposes. Depending on the rules of the game underway, the player returns any balls pocketed to the table or leaves them down ending their turn.

The main goal of a safety? To leave the opponent a shot possibility but a very, very low possibility--a near-impossible attempt.

Also Known As: Safe
Examples:
I played safe on the 9-ball and rather than return my safety with one of her own, Carol sank the nine to win.
