Brunswick and its subsidiary Brunswick Billiards, maker of fine pool and billiards tables, billiards supplies and billiards accessories, announced plans recently to layoff as many as 2,700 workers in an effort to cut costs in a market soft on billiards supplies and pool and billiards recreation.

Brunswick Billiards has a fine tradition, now close to two centuries old, of supporting the billiards community with the finest billiards supplies and accessories. The burgeoning company in its heyday expanded to include Balke Collender and other manufacturers until it virtually cornered the market in pool tables and billiards tables--yet without sacrificing quality manufacturing for most of its history.

The recreational products manufacturer plans to shut down 12 of its 29 major facilities by the end of 2009, removing over 1,000 jobs at various plants with another 1,700 layoffs pending possible plant closures, in an effort to save Brunswick annual costs of $300 million going forward.
