Vital Position Tool #1: For any given object ball stroke taken without english, you send the cue ball to the spot where an imagined line drawn through the ball centers would align with the pocket (This is a basic concept, not accounting for throw).

What I mean by “center of the cue ball or object ball” is the topmost part of the ball you can see, or its exact geographic center, or its base where it rests on the table.

It is critical to align to the center of the pocket opening, where the table’s cloth gives way to empty space, rather than the back of the pocket. Going for opening center will allow for the largest possible margin of error with the stroke.
