Miscue

By Matthew Sherman, About.com

Definition:

When the cue tip doesn’t make proper contact with the cue ball due to too little chalk, dirt on the cue ball, bad technique, etc. Miscues happen frequently when the cue ball is struck far from center as the tip abruptly slips off the ball in the middle of the stroke. Too low on a draw shot can cause the ball to jump right off the table!

Players in the know use the miscue as an excuse for a wide variety of mistakes, including the dreaded choke. “Gosh. I really miscued this afternoon.” “Why, that’s very sweet of you dear. I missed you too.”

Pronunciation: Pronounced as "miss-cue"
Examples:
I miscued on the cue ball and earned right instead of left english for my trouble.
