Felt

Definition: Pool slang for covering material cut from cloth, typically some combination of wool and/or nylon blends. The felt’s nap is installed running faster in one direction, so players will break with the nap for added break speed.

Without "felt" to absorb motion, the rolling balls would continue for quite a long time along the table bed.
