A topspin or follow stroke would need to be played slowly, so slowly, in fact, that the cue ball might roll off the shot line and ruin the shot. Playing a firmer shot will carry the cue ball, on the other hand, far past an ideal position for the 9-ball to win the game.

The solution is simple, if you know how. Stroke the ball with draw spin instead so that the draw over time wears to forward roll before it strikes the 8-ball.

This technique allows for a firm stroke to be taken. Practice at different speeds until you can mock the effect of having the cue ball much closer than it is for a topspin or center ball stroke. Creative does it, pool shooter!
