Definition: Markers found either on a table at its foot rail, or hung from a rope strung in a poolroom. They help to keep score during a game. Counters strung from a rope move from a nudge with a cue stick.
For small score games, a homemade counter is when players place a small coin on the felt, underneath the rails overhanging edge, where no ball can ever contact it. The coin is moved from diamond to diamond, as a counter to keep score conveniently.
Examples:
The players disagreement rose sharply as her mental tally contrasted with the score displayed on the tables counters.
