Filipino billiards star Efren "The Magician" Reyes has regained his status as the top pool moneymaker in professional pool, while newly-crowned world champ Ronnie Alcano follows hot on his heels.

Reyes cashed $2,000 for his ninth-place finish in the recent 2007 World 8-Ball Championship held in the United Arab Emirates to hike his total to $39,350.

His collection was enough to snatch the top spot from American Johnny "The Scorpion" Archer. Reyes was also the biggest earner in 2006 with a record $644,960 total.

Five other Filipinos are in the top 20 worldwide, underscoring the country's dominance of the sport. "This is yet another testament to our continued domination of the sport. The reality is that the Philippines is dominating the billiards industry in all fronts, and with the way things are going on, we're on track for another banner year, maybe better than last year," said Ernesto Fajardo, president of the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines.

Filipino pool shooters of all skill levels constantly play Straight Pool, a game which has all but vanished from the United States and other venues. Straight Pool builds any player's skills quickly, one reason why the Philippines' champions have reached their ascendancy of our sport.

Former #1 world money player Francisco "Django" Bustamante slid to No. 15 recently, while Filipino legend Jose "Amang" Parica is solidly posted at No. 17 with $8,670 banked this year.
